After all the excitement of lava and the cold of the other side of the island, it was time for some more sunshine and a well deserved rest. This hotel was great and had a huge slide to keep the kids busy while Lyndon and I just sat back and watched. The only hiccup was a Tsunami evacuation on our first night due to an earthquake in British Columbia. We were at dinner and an alarm just kept ringing. The staff were not to fussed by it all and then the band started to pack up early, a definitely warning sign.
Then, over the loud speaker came the announcement that the police had ordered the entire Keauhou area to be evacuated and that we had to go to higher ground. Well, not being a local we didn't really know where to go so just followed the long line of cars pouring out of the hotel car park, and just continued up the hill till we found an area we thought would be safe enough. Lucky for us a few others stopped there also. It was the car park of the local pub, so we had bright lights, music to while away the time and the bar stayed open the entire time. Great for us because we could use the bathrooms, buy a drink and watch it all unfold live on CNN. We were in the car from 9pm till 2am, when it was announced it was safe to head back down the hill. We were all a little nervous, not knowing what to expect or how serious it was all going to be, we managed a few winks of sleep but were definitely happy to get back to the hotel.
Our tour for the next day was cancelled as a safety precaution so we hung around the hotel a bit, went into the town for a spot of shopping and thanked our lucky stars it was not as bad as predicted.
The Sheraton Keauhou Resort, built on an old lava flow into the sea.
A lovely spot to watch the sun go down.
A beautiful uninterrupted view of the sunset.
The pool and slide was definitely big enough to keep the kids happy.
It also had a playroom for indoor activities.
A game of tennis was also on the activity list.
There were plenty of these little green moko getting around, and of course Emily just had to have one.
The adults pool.
Emily playing hair dresser while we waited for dinner.
Oh, we should have guessed something was not quite right when we saw this sign.
Anyway we did mange a little rest amongst all the excitement.
Finally allowed back to the hotel and this was the traffic jam trying to get there.
