SAVEA - Sea trials and work ups

After a couple of fulse starts with the Sea acceptance trials with the contractors (were they make sure everything is working correctly) it was finally time for VOEA SAVEA's crew to head out alone for some sea safety trials with Lyndon, Barry ( Officer from Australian Maritime College - Tassy) for two days were we made sure they could safely operate the new systems and could demonstrate they could fight fires and other breakdowns we gave them over a two day period. The second day we also picked up Chris (Australian Master Mariner) to also conduct a bridge and safety audit.

The Command team taking us out for the first time from the flying bridge.

Barry's pep talk at the leaving ships station.

A failed steering gear system on these boats is a whole ships evolution as it is done by block and tackle. 4 Tongan's on each side.

I told the boys I had a little surprise...... a smoke machine!!! The first exercise was a ripper the young fella casually opened the door and smoke bellowed out past him. Next all I saw was the whites off his eyes as visability was down to 1 foot. Then he took off screaming "Fire! Fire! Fire!" Possibly he thought it was a realby but I'm sure he wasn't expecting real smoke. LOL By the end of the two days they were used to fighting fires in low visibility.

After the first day this was the Jr Sailors mess. The sleeping lions Den!

Jim the Ross Haven LEP Boss was sick so it was left up to Kev the chippy who promptly mounted it too.

With workups successfully passed it was time for some crew photo's, Palangi and all.
