Melbourne Cup - Tongan Style

We found out this week that Melbourne Cup is also a big event here in Tonga but not because of the actual race or as a chance to dress up. It's only because they hold the function at the NUKU'ALOFA CLUB, one of the last 'men only' clubs in the entire south west pacific. So yes, any opportunity for women folk to get in the door is a big thing! Actually this year was even bigger as the girls were even allowed in the night before for the calcutta draw. We attended both functions and even ended up in a cyndicate with Jodie's Tourism friends. Three horses later, (possibly due to some impulse bids from the chicks) and our share price was $340 but as Jodie said, we are in with a chance (they were all outsiders though, we couldn't afford the favourites at $1800 a piece). A few drinks later the calcutta was over and we were back home to pick up the kids.

The next day (actual Melbourne Cup Day) Jodie and I were all dressed up and finally had somewhere to go. The doors opened at 14:00, and we were in the door at 14:01. Jodie was ready to soak up all that there was to offer. The people began to arrive with some going to more effort than others. A few more last minute sweeps tickets were purchased and a little dabble via the Chris connection in Cairns, Jodie was primed for the big race. 3 minutes later and a few wines it was back to the reality of looserville. Jodie picked up a couple of smaller wins and our cyndicate horses are still running so we stayed and soaked up the remainder of the ............ atmosphere (& beers) before heading home after a great day and night out with many friends and like minded people. Jodie also has heaps of great ideas for fancy hats utilising traditional patterns and materials for next year so watch out.
All dressed up and Jodie looking stunning as she always does for the GG's.We are with our partners in crime Salesi and Rochelle

Jodie loved this Tapa inspired facinator

Another stand out, using an unside down woven basket and christmas baubles

The best looking accessories the girls brought

After gentle pushing from Jodie, the girls got dressed up. Marion, Jen and Hannah - most were not going to bother.

John with the country look (his sheep station hat) and Annie with the Cambodian connection.

The girls sharing the prizes. Bubbles all round. Annie won most unusual outfit, she was in a pants suit with that hat.

Tapu, Jodie and Katri

After the race everyone hit the dance floor. Trish in the black dress infront, won best dressed, and Annie in her jump suit.

Jodie buying bubbles inside the club.

The most popular boys on the night and what a great job too. Thanks George - our drink waiter.

Sal looking for a good luck kiss. Bit late though maybe it's for next year?
